Fry Bread Taco

If you've ever been to a powwow, then you know that the one and only dish that is served on demand is the famous NDN Fry Bread Taco.

This delightful dish goes by many names, just like there are many numbers of tribes, clans, bands, and nations that serves their own version of this irreplaceable favorite. Fry Bread Taco, Native Taco, Navajo Taco, NDN Taco, are just some of the names that this dish goes by. None the less, this dish is typically made the same way, with Fry Bread as a base, and a delicious helping of taco toppings piled high!

To make this delicacy (yes, in Indian Country, the Fry Bread Taco is a supreme delicacy), you will need to master the art of making Fry Bread. To do so, follow the very simple 3 ingredient list below. An easy way to remember this recipe is the 4-3-2-1 method.

4 Cups of Flour

3 Tablespoons of Salt

2 Cups of Warm Water {EQUALS}

------------------------------

1 Ball of dough

Mix your wet and dry ingredients with your hands until a soft ball of dough forms. Add flour to the ball until it is no longer sticky. You want the ball of dough to jiggle but not stick or fall apart. Make individual balls of dough and let them sit for 20 minutes in a covered pan or dish. This will let the dough rise for maximum fluffiness.

At this point, begin heating up your skillet of canola oil for frying.

Once the dough has sat for 20 minutes, flatten your ball of dough into a disk shape, careful not to poke any holes in the dough.

Carefully lay your disk across the hot oil. Wait until the dough has puffed and is turning golden brown on the edges. Flip the dough to the opposite side for equal time in the oil. Quickly, but carefully, remove the bread from the oil and place on a paper towel inside a bowl.

Continue until all the dough is used.

Now for the fun, delicious, and easy part- building your taco!

You will need 1-2 pounds of seasoned ground beef (you could also opt for seasoned ground buffalo, or alternatively a 50/50 mix), fried and drained. Feel free to cook with green, yellow or white onions for added flavor. Then begin to assemble your taco toppings.

Popular traditional toppings include lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, and sour cream. For extra taste experience, top with salsa, queso and a hint of lime for an infusion of flavors!

There you have it, the Fry Bread Taco. Goes by many names, but is the same across the nations!
